Welcome to the Minervois
MAISON PLEIN SOLEIL IS AN ECO-HOUSE SITUATED ON THE SOUTH-FACING SLOPES
OF THE MONTAGNE NOIRE IN THE OCCITANIE REGION, SOUTH WEST FRANCE
The Minervois is a unique part of southern France, full of natural beauty (mountains, rivers and beaches) and historical interest (castles, canals and Roman ruins). Straddling the departments of Hérault and Aude, the region has a definite Mediterranean feel with vines as far as the eye can see – and an astonishing number of wineries to match.
The landscape has an abundance of olive, fig and cypress trees and the garrigue (scrubland) is covered with wild thyme and rosemary. Bounded on one side by the Canal du Midi and on the other by the Montagne Noire, the Minervois has easy access to the Pyrenees, Mediterranean beaches and regional national parks.
We have listed many activites for our guests to enjoy futher down the page – please scroll on!
The House
We completed the house build in 2022. It is a passive house, a design principle whereby buildings are so well constructed, insulated and ventilated that they retain heat from the sun and activities of people within the house, requiring little additional heating or cooling. The overhanging porch and green roof help to avoid over-heating in summer and solar gain warms the house in winter when the sun is low. The house is made from recycled and energy-efficient materials.
About the house
Outside
The lounge and two double bedrooms open onto the large wooden terrace, via full height south-facing sliding doors. Sun loungers, sun shade, dining table and chairs are arranged on the terrace levels. The terrace has room for outside dining under the cover of the porch. Loungers and outdoor chairs offer opportunities to relax beside the pool, and there is a barbecue in front of the house. There is parking for several cars close to the house.
Inside
The lounge has comfortable seating, dining table and chairs. The kitchen is well-equipped with a dishwasher, microwave oven and washing machine. The bathroom has a walk-in shower, large double basin and WC, and there is also a second separate WC.
Babies
We have a cot with bedding and a high chair for guest use if required. The shower includes a handheld shower head, perfect for washing small children.
Lounge
Sofa seating and armchairs, an interior dining table for four people. Exterior tables are available for summer dining on the terrace.
Kitchen
Equipped with Bosch oven, induction hob, dishwasher, full size fridge freezer and microwave. Cooking pans and utensils, plates, cutlery and serving dishes are supplied.
Bedroom 1
180 cm wide double bed, which can be split into twin beds on request. All bedding and towels are included.
Bedroom 2
140 cm wide double bed (not splitable). All bedding and towels are included.
Utility room
A washing machine, drying rack and outdoor washing lines are provided.
Swimming pool
The plunge pool is 3 x 2.2 m and 80 cm deep with an alarm. It is open from April to September. It is not heated.

Getting here
Location:
The house is in a small hamlet just 5 minutes drive north of Félines-Minervois. It is a very peaceful, relaxing location, and the village has an excellent restaurant and small, well-stocked shop that is also a ‘depot de pain’, and serves drinks (coffee, beer etc.) on its terrace.
Arrival
We share direction information (What 3 Words and Google Maps links) with booked guests about a week or so prior to arrival, via the Airbnb app.
Welcome
In most cases we are here to welcome our guests, to help them settle in and answer any questions. On a few occasions we may direct guests to a secure lockbox for the key on arrival.
FAQ’s
We have tried to answer some guest questions below. If you have any others not covered here, please contact us via the Airbnb app or use our WhatsApp form.
Are towels, bath mats and sheets included?
Yes. We supply a bath towel and smaller towel for each guest. Bath mats are included. Soap, shampoo and conditioner are in the bathroom and we supply toilet rolls for each rental. Sheets, pillowcases, duvets and bed covers are also provided.
Do you have any items for babies?
Yes. We have a travel cot with mattress and bedding, a high chair, baby bath and plastic plates etc. Do bring your own bedding (sheets pillow, etc) if you prefer.
Where can we cycle and walk?
Cycling
There are fantastic bike rides to be enjoyed locally, both on and off road, from a gentle spin along the Canal du Midi to a super ascent of the Pic du Nore (highest point in the Montagne Noire). We are keen cyclists ourselves and are always happy to suggest routes. Here are some routes by Tourism Corbières and we can suggest others. For bike hire try Big Up Cycling
We can keep guest bikes in our store if required
Walking
There are great walks from the house and within a short drive. Try a loop around the Lac du Jouarres or along the Canal du Midi, with a stop for a coffee or wine – there are many ‘randonnée‘ routes to explore. We have maps in the gite to plan your outing. France has a ‘right to roam‘ policy so it is generally ok to walk any path (unless marked as privé/private). Please keep the lovely countyside clean and bring home any rubbish.
Where can we get shopping?
Au Panier de Julie
Our local village store has a good range of daily essentials. Plus she stocks and a great selection of local wines, cheese, meat and sausage (dried). She is also a depot de pain with daily delivery of bread and pastries from one of the best local bakers.
Supermarkets
Carrefour Market in Peryiac-Minervois is our closest (10 mins drive), with a larger Carrefour on the ring road in Carcasonne that is handy if you exit the A61 motorway from Toulouse direction. If travelling from Béziers, there are a Carrefour or Leclerc supermarket on the ring road. Grand Frais in both Carcassonne and Béziers has a more ‘exclusive’ range.
But don’t forget the local markets have superb fresh produce, so please support our great producers. We list some excellent markets to try on the website.
How do we find the house and get in?
We send clear directions via the Airbnb app to all booked guests a week before arrival. They include GPS links and some photos. In most cases we will welcome our guests and help them settle in. Occasionally we may use a lockbox for self check-in.
Is there much to do locally?
Yes. There is lots to do all year round (though summer time is obviously busier). We have tried to list our favourite things on the page below. In summer most villages have fetes and bar au vins (not always announced, so please ask us for info). There are lovely villages and castles to explore, bars and cafes to try and superb countryside to get lost in!
Things to do
There are many things to do in the Minervois and wider region – of course, you can just relax on the house terrace and enjoy the sun and perhaps a wine, but here are some activities and places we enjoy…
On your doorstep, four things to enjoy

Walks from the house
There are walking routes to explore right on the doorstep – do check out the maps in the house. You are free to walk the vineyard tracks but please don’t taste or damage the fruit. Here is a more adventurous route to try.

Wild swim the barrage
There is a small water hole that is a short walk from the house, for swimming and picnicking. Note: It is uphill to come back. There are other swimming spots nearby that we can share with guests.

Tour the local vignerons
We have several excellent wineries in Félines-Minervois. Do visit Irène (our lovely friend) at Clos du Marbrier. There are several others to explore. It may involve a walk uphill after!

Millstone quarry
A fascinating walk (Sentier des Meulières) around a disused quarry that used to supply mill stones for a large area of France, all moved by horse and cart. A 5 minute drive from the house
Please think about the weather as it can be hot here in summer. Do take a hat, tops to cover arms, sunscreen and water if out and about.
Restaurants, our favourite four

Grand Café Occitan
Fantastic place! Luckily it is also the restaurant in our villlage. Superb food, lovely service from Ana and her team and only 5 mins away. It is very popular in summer so we recomend booking

Lo Cagarol
A well-established restaurant but still delivering excellent food and service. A short drive from us but well worth the trip. They have a lovely terrace for summer dining. Reservation recomended.

Vigne Vierge
Not so much a restaurant as dinner in someone’s home. Anne Sophie offers small plates accompanied by a superb choice of local and national wines. You dine, en famille style, with other diners, a great social evening. Capacity is small. Only Fridays and weekends.

Les Meulières
Les Meulières is a local institution serving for over 16 years. Situated in the nearby village of La Livinière. Recently extended and rennovated, of offers formal dining, plus a small tapas bar for casual drinks and nibbles. Booking required.
This is just a small of selection of restaurants. There are many others, close by and in the wider region that we love. Please don’t hesitate to ask us for other options and latest advice.
Bars and cafes, four more, not to bore

Bar Le Minervois
This little bar in Siran is great for drinks or a brasserie style meal on the sunny terrace. Open most days. In summer they often have a band playing. A good spot to see and be seen.

La Cantine du Curé
In the very interesting village of Caunes Minervois. A great friendly bar for summer, when it often has live music. A tapas menu, good beers and wine. Check website for latest.

Le Rive Gauche
Right on the Canal du Midi at Homps by the bridge. Simple bar food but good quality and a lovely place to watch the boats and people go by

Le Petit Causse
This small village bar re-opened recently with a husband and wife team, working hard. A lovely outdoor terrace to enjoy a pastis or wine. Pizza and small plate food.
This is just a small of selection of bars, others we like are Chez La Sosso in Peryiac-Minervois and Le Planchot in Pepieux.
Castles & historic sites, get lost in time

Lastours Castles
The four castles at Lastours offer a great oportunity to discover Cathar history in one place! A 20 minute drive from the house takes you back more than 300 years. Note: There are numerous steps and level changes, best for the sure footed.

Abbaye de Fontfroide
A beautiful abbey to discover in a secret valley, this is a wine-producing former Cistercian monastery with vaulted cloisters. The gardens and walks around it add to the charm. The restaurant is highly recommended. There are music nights and other events in summer.

Canal du Midi
This incredible piece of engineering and history combined is a major feature of the region. It can be enjoyed in villages such as Le Somail or the Fonseranes locks near Béziers, or by a towpath ride or walk along any part.

La Cité, Carcassonne
An amazing castle, that has been heavily restored (for better or worse). Very touristy in summer but worth the visit. We think it’s better to return to the lower town for coffee or to eat – one of our fave’s is Cafe Sailian.

Abbaye de Caunes-Minervois
Caunes has a spectacular abbey for such a small town. Do allow time to enjoy the town itself, which has many lovely streets, houses and art galleries, and an art tour each summer. It was a salt store for the Romans so many centuries of history lie in its streets.

Minerve
Tucked deep in the valley between the Cesse and the Brian rivers, Minerve clings to the rocky outcrop above. Steeped in history, from medieval times, suffering the attacks of Simon de Montfort. Today it is a peaceful (phew!), charming village to visit, dine in or just enjoy.

Château de Termes
This small castle with a fascinating history is just into the Corbiers, formerly the Archbishops of Narbonne. Dating from the 11th centrury it was remodeled in the 14thC and . It sits in a beautiful valley and is well worth a visit.

Opidium d'Enserune
Created around 575 BC, Ensérune is a fortified city perched on a hillside whose steep slopes offered natural protection. settlement is typical of the Iron Age (850 to 50 BC). Can be added to a trip to Capestang as it is close by.
CATHAR CASTLES
The Cathars left a legacy of maginificent castles to explore. Some are outside our immediate region, with travel to some of them of around two hours. However, they are quite amazing and well worth a trip to one or all of them. To find out more…
There are many more historic sites to explore – check out websites such as National Monuments, Tourism Hérault and Tourism Aude.
Cities and villages, big and small fun

Narbonne
Narbonne, a Roman town with the Robine Canal (branch of the Canal du Midi) running through the centre, is a delightful town about an hour’s drive away. It has one of the best ‘Les Halles‘ in France, with great bars inside and around to enjoy local produce. Check out the truncated cathedral and Narbo Via museum full of Roman antiquities.

Béziers
A beautiful historic town with dominant Cathederal viewable from a distance. Allées Paul Riquet (named after the engineer of the Canal du Midi) is the main street with shops and bars. The older town is a treat of criss crossing streets. The ‘Les Halles‘ market has been smartly restored. The view and a drink from The Prison bar and restaurant is worth a stop.

Carcassonne
The Cité, medieval castle and the lower old town is smaller than both Narbonne and Béziers but deserving of a stop for the history and busy Thursday/Saturday markets. Place Carnot has great for bars and places to eat. The Carcassonne festival is excellent, with free activites and music often on in Place Carnot during summer.

Capestang
On a smaller scale than Narbonne or Béziers, Capestang has the canal to its northen edge with bars and a good range of restaurants and bars such as Le Vauban and La Paix near the central square. There’s a small Saturday market and a great brewery. Capestang could be visited as part of a trip to Béziers.
Narbonne, Béziers and Carcasonne are the main local towns. The larger cities of Toulouse, Montpellier and Perpignan are all 1.5 hours drive (or train) away, which are all superb places to visit if time allows. See ‘Going further’ section below.
Markets, vide greniers and fetes, local products to enjoy

Olonzac and Saint Chinian markets
These are two of the best markets in the region. Olonzac is the regional town of the Minervois and the market occupies the main street and alleyways on Tuesday morning. St Chinian has two weekly markets in the summer season, every Thursday and Sunday. In high season they often have a night market. Other markets along the canal.

Narbonne Les Halles
Recently awarded the best covered market in France, it does not disapoint – the market is busy and full of top quality produce. A visit can be extended by taking lunch in one of the excellent bars and cafes inside or in the immediate streets outside. Saturday am is the best time to visit. Note: all French makets begin closing around 12:30/13:00.

Vide Greniers
Vide Greniers (literally, empty attics!) are a great way to enjoy bargain hunting – both treasures and tat can be found. They are on in many villages over the year and summer reaches a high point. Visit the Vide Grenier website to see where and when they are on or just keep a look out for posters and signs in villages .

Fêtes
Most villages have a weekend fête (some have several), where the village has a bar au vin and food, often with a band or even fun fair! June and July are the peak period for village parties. This website has some village and other types of fêtes.
Note: Markets are a morning thing in France (sorry if you want a lie in!) and they are closing down by 12:30/13:00 so best to get going early…
Kids time, jump, leap, splash and run

Gouffre Géant de Cabrespine
Cave system with suspended walkways, underground river boat tours and a zip-line course. A great day out and possible relief from the day’s heat in a cave system over 200m deep.

O2 Adventure
A Go Ape style adventure park for children and adults, with zip-wires and other activities, located on Lac de la Cavayére just south of Carcassonne. Nearby is the Aqua Park with water slides, inflatables and other water-based fun!

Lac de Pradelles-Cabardès
A small but nice swimming lake, about 40 mins drive from the house. There is a bar on the lake side. The route is via the road to Pic de Nore, which is the high point of the Montagne Noire range and offers a fabulous viewpoint of the region.

Lac de Jouarres
This reservoir for the Canal du Midi doubles as a great outdoor water resource for locals, with swiming, sailing and barbecue spaces. There’s a lifeguard during summer and paddleboards and kayaks for hire. The circular walk around the lake is flat and La Guinguette du Lac is open for refreshments and meals.
Beaches and lakes, dips to dive for

Plage de Mateille
A large sandy beach with gentle drop away on entry to the sea. We particulary like the bar Mosquito Coast (don’t worry, it’s not infested!) and you can drive onto the beach with a car and park behind the bar. This is an exposed beach so do take shade, water and sun cream.

Narbonne Plage
Narbonne plage is the closest beach to us, just under an hour drive. The beach is long but can be busy in high summer. There are bars and restaurants all along the beach front. The beach bar Le Monoi is a nice spot for a refuel and drink after a swim.

Bize-Minervois river
Bize has a dam that restricts the flow of the Cesse river, creating a super river swiming place. There are grassy banks to picnic on, and the village has a shop, bar and restaurants. Note: the river is cold even in high summer – get in carefully!

Plage de Doul
The Lac de Doul is a saltwater lagoon, created from the salt marshes nearby. There are accessible walks from Peryiac-de-Mer along boardwalks to the small beach. Peryiac-de-Mer itself is a chic village with nice bars and a few trendy shops.
Cycling, bikes of all types
We love cycling and the Minervois has some great routes to suit all levels, everything from gentle spins along the Canal du Midi to more taxing climbs up the Pic du Nore and more. It’s a super area for riding and not as well-known as some parts of France, so you may have the roads to yourselves. Feel free to bring your bikes as we can store them safely, or there are local hire options if needed.
Just send a message…
Vines and vignerons, taste the local tipples
This is a selection of our current favourite (fantastic) Minervois domaines. They can be visited in half a day; however, we would reccomend to make a day of it and stop for lunch in a cafe or restaurant en route. The last link is for the Cru de La Livinière, an association of producers with the best wine in the region – Felines is one of small villages that belong to the association.

Of course this list is not extensive – there are many other excellent domains to visit in the Minervois and wider region. Please visit the Corbières Minervois website to learn more about the wine region.
Au panier du Julie in the village stocks a good range of wines from Félines-Minervois winemakers if you don’t have time for a wine tour.
Going further, exploring the region

Toulouse
We love Toulouse, it has a great buzz about it, set on the Garonne river with a maze of little streets leading to the Place du Capitol. Known as the ‘Rose’ city due to the red brick buildings, it is a lovely day trip of 1.5 hour drive or train away. We have our fave areas (Calmes market is one) but there are many others – see the tourist board for more places to visit.

Montpellier
Montpellier like Toulouse is our other nearby large city. Don’t ask us to choose our favourite… they both have great charms, lovely centres with excellent shopping, restaurants and bars to enjoy. Both have top cultural options with museums and theatres. Again the tourist board has more info. Enjoy either city or both!

Sete
Sete is on our top spot list. About an hour away it has the Grand canal, great beaches on the coast to the south and a continuous schedule of festivals. The bars restaurants near the market have a good buzz. There is a bi-annual Tall Ships festival in spring and jousting takes place every summer on the Grand Canal (very ‘Venice’!) .

Perpignan
Perpignan (1.5 hrs) has a real Spanish flavour to it – tapas bars (such as Chez Henri) abound in small alleys near the Têt river. About the size of Narbonne it has enough to enjoy in a day. Don’t miss a visit to the Palace of the Majorcan Kings, or the edgy Saint Jacques quarter.
